  10. SYMPTOMS
  11. ========

  13. After you install Microsoft Office 97 on your computer, you may receive
  14. the following error message when you open an image file in Microsoft 
  15. Paint:
  16.  
  17.    This program has performed an illegal operation and will be shut down.
  18.    If the problem persists, contact the program vendor.
  19.  
  20. If you click Details, you receive an error message similar to the
  21. Following message:
  22.  
  23.    MSPAINT caused an invalid page fault in module MSPAINT.EXE at
  24.    0137:0042d3fe.
  25.  
  26. CAUSE
  27. =====
  28.  
  29. This problem occurs because of a conflict between Microsoft Paint and the
  30. graphics import filters included with Microsoft Office 97.
  31.  
  32. The problem may occur when you open the following types of files:
  33.  
  34.    DRW
  35.    EPS
  36.    GIF
  37.    JPEG
  38.    JPG
  39.    PCD
  40.    PICT
  41.    TGA
  42.    TIFF
  43.  
  44. The problem may also occur when you open any other type of file that 
  45. requires a graphics import filter.
  46.  
  47. The problem does not occur when you open PCX (PC Paintbrush) or BMP
  48. (Windows bitmap) image files.

  50. RESOLUTION
  51. ==========

  53. Windows 95
  54. ----------
  55.  
  56. 1. Download the Paint95.exe file from the Microsoft Software Library to 
  57.    an empty folder.
  58.  
  59. 2. Double-click the file you downloaded in step 1 to expand it.
  60.  
  61. 3. Copy the Mspaint.exe file to the Program Files\Accessories folder.
  62.  
  63. 4. Copy the three .dll files to the Windows\System folder.
  64.  
  65. 5. Restart your computer.
  66.  
  67. Windows NT 4.0
  68. --------------
  69.  
  70. 1. Download the Paintnt.exe file from the Microsoft Software Library to 
  71.    an empty folder.
  72.  
  73. 2. Double-click the file you downloaded in step 1 to expand it.
  74.  
  75. 3. Copy the .exe and .dll files to the Winnt\System32 folder.
  76.  
  77.    NOTE: You may not be able to copy the Msvcrt.dll file while you are 
  78.    in a Windows NT session. If this is the case, boot your computer to 
  79.    Windows 95 or MS-DOS and then copy the file.

  101. Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in Microsoft Office 97 for 
  102. Windows. We are researching this problem and will post new information 
  103. here in the Microsoft Knowledge Base as it becomes available.

  105. MORE INFORMATION

  108. The graphics import filters included with Microsoft Office 97 are not
  109. compatible with the versions of Microsoft Paint included with Microsoft
  110. Windows 95 and Microsoft Windows NT version 4.0.
  111.  
  112. If you have not installed the patch, do not attempt to open image files in
  113. Microsoft Paint unless they are either PCX or BMP files.
  114.
